Frameless Shower Doors

Frameless shower doors provide many benefits, including:

Shower Door Types

Pivot Shower Door

A pivot shower door is a type of shower door that opens and closes on pivots or hinges, similar to a traditional door. It usually consists of a single glass panel that is attached to the wall and swings open and closed on a pivot hinge. Pivot shower doors can also have double panels, with one panel attached to the wall and the other attached to the first panel, allowing for a wider opening.

Sliding Shower Door

A sliding shower door is a type of shower door that slides open and closed on tracks. It usually consists of two or more glass panels that slide past each other to create an opening for entering and exiting the shower. The sliding mechanism allows for easy access without requiring any extra space to swing open a hinged door.

Hardware and Glass Options

There are many different hardware and glass options for frameless shower doors, including:

Clear: The most popular residential shower door and glass wall installation option. Clear glass offers an excellent balance between price and overall look.
Low Iron: Also known as extra-clear glass, low iron glass goes through a process to remove additional iron content from the glass, producing its extra-clear effect.
Velour Etch: Also known as acid etch glass, is an attractive option that offers privacy while still allowing light to pass through.

Shower Door FAQ

Tempered glass is a safety glass that can break into small pieces that are not sharp. Tempered glass is chemically strengthened to be more resistant to shattering than annealed glass and is four times stronger than regular glass. Making it ideal for shower door installations.

Low iron glass has a low iron content, making it more transparent. Clear glass has a higher iron content producing a slightly green hue.

A typical shower door manufacture time ranges between 7 and 12 business days.

We only use tempered glass from the highest-quality suppliers, and generally, an installer can be scheduled within days of your glass being ready for installation by our scheduling coordinator.

Frameless shower doors are water resistant, not waterproof. Designed correctly, fixed panels using mildew-resistant silicone will not leak. However, a direct spray on the shower door can induce leaking. Frameless shower doors can also leak if they are not installed correctly or if the seal around the door is damaged. If you have a frameless shower door leaking, we recommend contacting a professional to assess the situation and make the necessary repairs.

We recommend cleaning with an ammonia-free glass cleaner once a week.

In between this timeframe, squeegee or towel the glass after each use of your shower because if it is not cleaned correctly, mineral deposits will form on its surface, which gives an unwelcoming appearance.

Pros:

They Look The Best

A frameless shower door is considered the top in the shower glass category. Their edges aren’t covered with any seal or metal, making them look much more elegant than framed options. If you’ve spent time and money on decorative tile work in the shower, the best way to show it off is with a frameless shower door. Also, their frameless nature allows for unobstructed sightlines inside the bathroom. Giving the bathroom a larger feel.

Their Easy To Clean

The lack of rubber and metal track gives mould and bacteria a harder time adhering to a frameless shower door. Their “all glass look” design makes them much easier to clean.

Their Customizable

Let your creativity run wild! Frameless shower doors can be personalized in any style or form; you are not restricted to a specific design or shape.

Cons:

They’re More Expensive

Expect to spend more on a frameless shower door. The thicker glass is one of the main reasons for the price increase. The thicker glass that provides the beautiful “all glass look” everyone is attracted to requires more expensive hardware than its framed counterpart to support the added weight of the frameless door and panels. The added weight also makes them harder to install. This means professional installation is required.

Expect to pay $800.00 – $3000.00 for the material and installation of a frameless shower door. Prices also depend on the glass enclosures size, glass thickness, design and hardware selected. Framed shower doors range anywhere from $600.00 – $1000.00 for the material and installation.

They Can Be Fragile

You should always handle any shower door with care. But the odd time, they’ve been known to shatter.

Don’t emphasize this much when deciding what type of shower door to install. It’s been reported that there are two primary reasons for a frameless shower door shattering. The first is improper installation, while the second is slight imperfections that occurred during the fabrication process.

This is why using a professional installation company with experience and commitment to quality work like The Upper Hand | Glass & Closet Products is essential when deciding to go with a frameless shower door.

A frameless shower door is the easiest to keep clean. The lack of a frame makes cleaning the shower door much easier than a framed one. No more worrying about sludge and soap scum in crevices; you can simply wipe it down quickly!

In short, yes, you can install a shower door yourself. Framed and frameless versions are available in what the industry calls “boxed doors”. These doors use a kind of one size fits all approach that comes with everything you need including the glass, hardware etc., in a box and made in China. But have you ever seen all the open boxes (returns)? That’s because many people have tried but were either disappointed with the look and it not fitting their enclosure as they imagined or figured out that the installation is not easy. So it’s usually not the best idea. Frameless shower doors designed by a professional company are explicitly meant for your enclosure. There measured and ordered to fit your space and your space alone. No two shower door enclosures are the same.
